It was the week before December 13, 2003 when my husband’s best friend and groomsman called:

Lemon 1: Man, I am so sorry, but I cannot come to the wedding and be a groomsman because of financial situations. So we had to find a replacement groomsman in one week. We used my brother, who so graciously accepted. Lemonade made.

Also….

The morning of my wedding, my husband received a phone call from another groomsman:

Lemon 2: My grandfather passed away, and the funeral home scheduled the funeral at the same time as your wedding, so I cannot be a groomsman now. Later that same day, it turned out to be a blessing that he missed our wedding as he helped save a guy who just collapsed on the railroad tracks in Indianapolis. Lemonade made.

It was the night before December 12, 2003 when a phone call came from my cousin.

Lemon 3: My daughter has a 104 degree temperature, so I cannot be one of your bridesmaids, because I have to go take her to the doctor today. My first thought, was of course things have to be memorable in my life to make sure I do not forget them (sarcastic tone here). My brother’s fiancé stepped in as a bridesmaid replacement. Lemonade made.

It was the day of the wedding. The day I have planned for years of my life. This is the day, when it was like I was opening my childhood Wedding Time Capsule of everything I had written out that would make the “perfect day,” so nothing would go wrong.

At this point, I was beginning to question if we were to get married today. My face looked like the poor baby in the photo above tasting a lemon for the first time. This was a milestone moment in my life. Was I going to continue to be bitter, or make it better?

The morning of the wedding, as things are being set up….

Lemon 4: My replacement bridesmaid was a praise, but we had to frantically adjust her bridesmaid dress, so that it fit her, instead of my cousin who was going to be here, but because of her poor daughter being sick, she had to decline. I am very thankful for people who know how to sew on a split-second. Lemonade made.

Then…..

Lemon 5: My husband-to-be reported to me (as our flower girl passed notes back and forth between us in our rooms as we were getting ready), that for the groomsmen that reminded, one had a zipper broken on their suit, the bowties did not match, and he had a button missing. So, the suit rental place hurried to the church to bring matching bowties, new suit pants with a zipper that worked, and our faithful sewer put a button on my husband’s shirt. Lemonade made.

As I was about to scream….I was stepping back and looking at how everyone was working together to make things work. I remembered an inspiring message I was given, from an influential person, in life from…a message to dance in the rain.

Lemons - 2

As we were exchanging vows, then the minister asked for the rings.

Lemon 6: I forgot to bring the rings. I left them in our changing room. I was so embarrassed. I just said, “Wait, stop. Pause the show.” Then, once again, my maid of honor gave me her ring on her pinky to “borrow” for our wedding. This was quite a show for everyone, however, I was later told by the maintenance man of the church, who has seen many weddings there, that it was “one of the most beautiful weddings there he has ever seen.” Lemonade made.

You know, life really does have many milestone moments. Treasure these memories, especially your thoughts, feelings, and mementos from your wedding day in a wedding time capsule. You can get a decorative Wedding Time Capsule from https://www.timecapsule.com/product/weddingtimecapsule/.

Wedding Day Mementos - Wedding Time Capsule

Sometimes I think we are given lemons, to help teach us and create a milestone moment lesson about life.

Milestone Moment Lesson: We learned how to work together and make lemonade from our 6 lemons.

People always say, have a plan B. I know this is something I will teach my future children and a “Message to the Future” I will leave for them to learn. Not only a plan B, but use the rest of the alphabet if needed.

This was a creative thinking wedding, and one of team work. We learned how to turn bad into good, not be bitter but better. Don’t get caught up in making things so perfect, that you forget to enjoy your day. When life give you lemons….make lemonade. Have a lemonade stand at your wedding. How cute is this idea?
