What to Put in a Time Capsule

Time Capsules with Hand Print Kit

A time capsule is a personalized treasure to pass on to future generations. Create pictures that support the stories you want your children to own. Your photos are just one main piece of the story that you can include in your time capsule. Pass on what you value most with pictures that represent your virtues and what daily life is like for you and your family in this world at this time.

Your Testimony as told by your Family Photos

Your family photos are your testimony of how similar or not similar you are to your siblings or parents. It will be fun years later to open the time capsule, and see where you got your prominent chin, sarcasm, artistic talent, etc. If you are like me, you can finally have someone to follow down the family tree history line, to blame for your disorganization. Ha Ha.

Why does your family get along, or not get along? How did you become who you are today? What special occasions or milestone moments have impacted your life or dreams? Many times we may find ourselves saying “where did the time go?”

    Family is Always There

    Capture your Daily Photos

Our daily lives cry out for attention, because it is our daily schedules that help shape us. Here is a list of ideas or topics to create photos of for your time capsule, to capture your family.

    1. A day in the life of each family member’s typical day (make a short video or take photos from morning until night time for each member).

    2. What do you do on the weekends, most of the time? (places you go, things you eat, and people you visit).

    3. What are your bedtime habits or rituals? You could even save a piece of material from your favorite pajamas you wear each night to save in the time capsule.

    4. Include a picture of your daytimer schedule or an actual page from your daily planner, to show your regular schedule.

    5. Take photos of what you usually did on school snow days or when the electricity went out in your home for a few hours.

    6. Include pictures of your typical meals you ate throughout the week, where you each ate dinner, who set the table, did dishes, or other dinner time traditions.

    7. Make sure you capture photos of how you did your hair every morning. That style may be long gone years later, let alone the photos causing a big laugh at that hair style years later.

    8. Pictures of where you worshiped, went to clubs, or other social events on a regular basis.

    9. Don’t forget to include photos of your daily routine with you loved pets too. Your raising on pets may have taught you responsibility and influenced who you are to this day.

    10. What stores, hobbies, or other places do you visit each week? Make sure to take photos of these places you visit or favorite things you do so often during the week. It would be interesting years later to see how your interests change or how long they stay the same.

    11. What is your weekly homework or work routine? Capturing photos of these routines, can help you remember to enjoy the moment and slow down in life. Also, when you open your time capsule years later, you can see how your own work ethic slowly developed.

    12. Also make sure to take pictures of your daily chores. This can be something helpful years down the line, when your children are parents themselves, who now come back and ask you what age did he or she start doing laundry or dishes to now start teaching their own children.

    13. Take a photo of your home that you live in daily at this time. A home can change over time, years later. As you age, it ages. This photo will be especially significant, if the same family lives in the home from generation to generation.

Preserve these photos in a time capsule, to give future generations the ability to see what life was like when you were growing up. Your story is important. Do not let your life slip by day by day, and not capture what all you have learned during your daily grind. Help teach your children and your children’s, children where they came from. History is important and I do not want you to get so busy in life, that you forget what life is all about – family.
