What Heirlooms to Save in a Time Capsule

What Heirlooms to Save in a Time Capsule, Keepsake Box, or Memory Box

Mementos - Baby Time Capsule

If this time capsule could talk, I am sure there are a lot of tales it could tell. Oh wait, this baby time capsule can talk. Just open it, and read the “Message to the Future” letters from family and friends who made predictions for the child the first year of his birth.

Preserve your father’s handwriting; your mothers perfume smell, or the priceless message written by your grandfather in the time capsule. What a momentous day it will be when your child opens the time capsule and precious heirloom items found in it.

What mementos do you save?

We all have touching things that are so important to us. What do you keep, give away, or throw away?  How many boxes of things do you have lying around in your house that you keep meaning to organize?

Newspaper

Instead of saving an entire newspaper, cut out the article you want, and save it in a plastic protected page, so that the words from the paper does not bleed onto other special papers you may keep in the time capsule.

Pens

Also make sure you save special pens in a protected envelope or small baggie. You do not want the pen to accidentally leak onto your other valuables in the time capsule.

Books

Save favorite books that mean so much to you, in the time capsule too. What a fun way to help your family keep traditions alive, by passing down a book for each new family to read. What a great keepsake memento to save for years to come.

Fabric Items

Save them in protective bags or a special archival bag to keep possible moisture from ruining them. We all have meaningful attachments to certain fabrics, so take special care of it. If something is too big to save in a time capsule, and you still want the memory of, but not the physical item you could photograph it and keep the picture of it, instead of the actual item.

Family Photos

Family means everything!  Be sure to include family photos from the studio as well as memorable events you have shared over the years.  Include some that make you laugh, some that make you cry, and some that just make you think.

Audio and Video Files

Save family movies and audio files from the past.  Put these on a USB Drive or a DVD in a protective sleeve (plastic sleeve is better, but a paper sleeve will work.)  These movies and audio files will mean the world to you in the future.

News or Entertainment Magazines

Pick up a current copy of the Times and put it into your capsule.  You may even want to include a tabloid paper or gossip magazine.  The current events that are in the magazines will be sure to entertain when they are read in the future.

US Savings Bonds

Money, Money, Money!  Money changes over time.  Include current US Dollars, Savings Bonds (which will mature while they are waiting in the capsule), and any foreign currency you want.  These will not only be fascinating in the future, but will also provide a financial incentive when opening the capsule.

Year In Review

Be sure to get the Year in Review from Timecapsule.com HERE and include it in your capsule.  This will give you the top headlines, Sports winners, entertainment and top ten lists from the year of your event.

Where to get a Time Capsule

Please do not just leave your precious items in a cardboard box on the floor, for the water heater to break and ruin these memories. Scrapbooks and time capsules keep memories alive. There are certificates of blessings, photographs of grandparents gone, and it is a heart break to see things gone. You cannot replace these memories with insurance money. Please continue to visit and comment on our blog for stories, tips, and great ideas of how to protect things that are very important to you.
