What to Include in a Video Time Capsule
Learn about what to include in a video time capsule. Review this memorable video time capsule decades later, and reminisce about what life was like when you were born, a teenager, or adult. It is so much fun making a time capsule, but with the internet and cell phones with video it is easy to make a video time capsule.

You can do so many different, fun things with video. Video is a great way of communicating visually what your life looked like at the time that you make your time capsule too. Make sure you include the tangible, sentimental and heirloom items in addition to your video time capsule. Imagine your great grandchildren watching this video in the future, and being able to hold the actual pocket watch or other important item from their great grandfather. It would be like he is right there, when opening the time capsule. Now, that would be a priceless moment that would need Kleenex.
Make sure you use and record the highest quality video available. You want the little details to be so clear decades later. Most importantly, make sure you save a means for playing the video back in the future. Even if you save the video somewhere online, like on You Tube or a social media page, it is still important to back it up somewhere else.
What to Record
- A local and national news broadcast from your child’s birthday or her first or last day of school. If you are an teenager or adult putting together a time capsule video, make sure you record the news from the week or that day, highlighting the major current news events. For example, this year around this time would be all about who is going to win the election — Trump or Hillary. How interesting would this be for your future children to see this video. You could even write down your prediction of who you think will win this election, in your “Message to the Future” letter you hand write for your future child, and leave in the Baby Time Capsule, for example.
- An episode of your favorite tv show at the time or the top tv series for this year.
- Your child’s favorite cartoon or television show.
- An awards show (Academy Awards, Grammy Awards, etc).
- A tabloid-style or entertainment news tv show (TMZ, Access Hollywood, etc for example).
- A scientific or future-oriented program (NOVA for example).
- A talk show (Dr. Phil, The View, Maury, etc).
- Year-in-Review specials aired in December and January.
- A video interview of your child.
- A video Message to the Future (from family or friends).
- A video tour of your home, your child’s school, city, or daily routine.
- Make sure you save small video snippets from your child’s school plays or programs.
- Interview your grandparents and have them save the family history on a video. What was life like when they went to school or worked for a living.
- Whatever you do, make sure you have someone else interview you (the person behind the camera too).
Just set your camera on something sturdy, sit around the table and be creative of different things to record on your video time capsule. This is a personalized gift to you and your family in the future. We will discuss this more in our next blog.
