How to Write a “Message to the Future?”

How to write a “Message to the Future” letter to myself?

Message to the Future

Many times, we joke with ourselves, saying things like “Note to self…don’t do that again.” Why not write an actual “note to self” about other issues and stories that we come across in life that teach?

I was standing in my bathroom, getting ready for work thinking about my friends’ problems, and some of my own I was facing in life at the time. That is when I thought, you know I can call my mom and dad and get advice from them today, right this moment. They can offer me encouragement, love, and support as I journey this new stage in my life. I have a friend, who going through similar married life struggles, who cannot just pick up the phone and call her parents.

That is when I screamed out loud, out of frustration for her. I am sure many of you have been there, saying what would my mom do when:

– Your child has a fever
– Your child will not stop crying
– You feel you are having an increase in arguments in your marriage lately
– You cannot agree on ____________________ in your marriage (fill in the blank)
– Etc

That is when I vowed to myself, that I did not want my child to live like this. Yes, she can always call me anytime (day or night). I want her to have more though. I want her to have a lasting voice, a voice that provides true and memorable insight, value, truth, and help.

I want my child to have my every thought written down during similar struggles and of life’s pleasures or happy times, so she or he can imitate also.

That is when I wished my mother had written a “message to the future” letter to herself about these kinds of times in life, to reflect her thoughts and what she did in certain situations.

Message to the Future -2

– Who do you call when you need encouragement?
– How do you know your friends are truly your friends in life? How do your friends treat you?
– How do you know “he” is the one to marry? Did anything change your mind as to why you married “him?”
– How do you stay calm during your arguments with friends or family? How will you react in the future?
– What do you enjoy doing the most right now? What will you enjoy doing in the future?
