I was thinking about titling this Blog, “If These Walls Could Talk,” but I wanted you to know what it was really about just reading the title. If you do not read anything in this blog, you have to watch the video at the end. Take the time to do that. It is inspiring.

“What are you doing” Dad yelled from a distance.

“Nothing” my brothers and I would say.

For a child, “Nothing” means “Something” and you better go check on them. We were picking the drywall apart to get to the inside. What????? It makes for some great chalk for our toy chalkboard grandpa made for us.

We had creative minds as siblings. I am sure you remember some fun things like that you did as a child too. Making a time capsule in the wall of your home is a great bonding experience for your family and gives permission for your kids to actually write on the walls.

I grew up in a house, constantly being remodeled. My parents loved to take down walls, build and install different cabinets, rearrange furniture, etc. I learned home improvement at a young age. In fact, I may just die of a sawdust overdose.

Putting a Time Capsule in your Home Wall

Well, enough about me. What is the point you ask? Well, all homes have stories, especially the rooms with the child scribbles on the wall, that your mom or dad scrubbed and scrubbed to get off.

Childhood years go by so fast, just ask your mother. Here at The Original Time Capsule Company, we like to treasure those special moments that fly by. Why not take the time to make a time capsule of your family or home, then hide it in between your walls, so when the next person moves in, and possibly takes down the wall, they will have a history of the home and you?

So let’s learn how to make a time capsule wall. I have always wanted to know the stories, especially of old farm house homes. My husband and I have worked in real estate in the past and have come across many strange things left in homes, especially since we worked with repossessed homes. What do you want to leave your children or the next owners in your home? What legacy will you tell them about your home?

If you want something to put in your wall, and hold actual items in it, then check out the ideas on this helpful website at http://www.myroomrecipes.com/2011_11_01_archive.html. Keep in mind that not all items will survive over time if you go for extreme lengths of time. Make sure to use a sturdy container, which is air tight. If it was my family who moved in, with all the remodeling my parents have done, we would have found a time capsule in a wall in no time.

Other ideas are to discuss why you hid the time capsule where you did in the home, explain your home improvements so far, or why you decided to build where you did. Using a permanent marker, leave words of wisdom, or sentimental statements, about your home on the two-by-four boards behind your walls. Simply peeling away the many layers of paint or wall paper on your wall, can tell you how many times it took before you settled on a color for your walls. This may describe a family who was very indecisive who lived in that home. You may even want to save a photo or layer of all your colors of paint used in your home throughout the years.

This is such an inspiring video of a time capsule found in a home, created by a wife, who passed away. The new owners of this home helped find the living husband of the wife, and presented the time capsule to him. This video is why we do what we do – to keep memories alive in homes and families.
