Valuable Tips My Parents Taught Me About Stress
These are some valuable tips my parents taught me about stress. I hope they help you today or in the future too. We, at The Original Time Capsule company, are all about paying it forward as far as life advice. Sometimes life can really throw us a curve ball. What do you do when you get devastating or sad news? What keeps your faith strong or your spirits high? What have you learned from your parents or other strong mentors in your life to help boost your mood and stay strong during hard times?
You never know what life will bring you from day to day. With all these shootings going on around the world, it is hard to not sit back and analyze your life. Who do you want to be known as? What do you want people to say about you when you are gone? I don’t mean for all these questions to be negative at all, but rather challenge you in your thinking as you are walking daily saying hello to friends and strangers. Even when you are interacting with the grocery cashier, what do you say? You never know what few words of inspiration can impact them for life. You never know if the next stranger you meet just might be your “next big thing” you need in life to move your life forward in a great way. Treat everyone with respect, my parents taught me. There are many valuable tips my parents taught me, but sometimes you have to think back to what some of these are. We don’t want you to have to think back, when in need. We want you to be able to grab a list and get started relieving your stress levels.
Sometimes you get to the point in life where you don’t care about anything except spending time with family and friends. Life can give you perspective sometimes, when tragedy strikes.
I have mentioned in previous blogs, that I was once sitting in church listening to a guy preach who impacted me. He said, “what are you doing with what God has given you to change the world of His people?” That hit me like a ton of bricks.
So that is my question to you too. What are you doing with your talents, lessons learned in life, insights given you, and education you have (whether street smarts or book studies)?
Here are some things my parents have taught me to help me get through tough times in my life.
- When you don’t know what to do, even if you don’t believe, pray (it can’t hurt).
- Turn to others who have been through similar experiences and seek advice from them.
- Learn and make a long list of things that help your stress level go down. Then, start going through that list for as long as you can, to help ease some of your stress. Also remember stressing over something only makes things worse (as our anxiety levels increase). It does not really do anything for our situation.
- Sit down and write out a plan to help solve your problem as best you can. Take action.
- If you do not have an accountability partner, get one. Find someone you can call and trust, love, and care for enough that you can accept being asked tough questions by them, to make sure you are taking care of yourself.
- Get in a support group to help you not feel alone. Loneliness is one of the first things that can lead you down a path of depression, which can be very dangerous.
- Read comforting scripture, or quotes, books, etc to help keep your spirits high during times of chaos. Meditate on positive statements.
- Try to stay on your daily routine as much as possible to feel like you have some control over things and there is some, consistent, things you can count on.
- Use visualization to imagine good things happening. Think about and look at positive photos or listen to inspiring, good stories to keep your mind focused. Use positive self talk and think about things to be grateful for.
- If you feel like you have a bunch of built up energy and stress to get rid of, exercise, walk it off, go swimming, dance, and breathe deeply. Be silly and shake it off.
- Write out a list of everything that is stressing you out. Then as you get things accomplished, check them off.
- Listen to some calming music. Take a bubble bath (one of my favorite things to do).
- Find things to make you laugh, even if you have to find free jokes to read on the internet. A cheerful heart is good medicine. Really.
- Hug a pet and play with them. They can help you calm down in a great way.
