How to Live with No Regrets – Treasure your Baby Photo Album and Baby Memory Book
I recently re-watched the movie “With Honors . . .” This movie stars Joe Pesci, playing Simon, and Brendan Fraser, playing Monty.
Monty is a young man who is a senior at Harvard University and is on track to graduate with honors. Through a series of minor tragedies, he manages to loose the only copy of his senior thesis. These 88 pages are found by a homeless man named Simon, who is living in the Harvard library. With winter fast approaching, Simon decides to hold the thesis hostage in order to make it through the winter.
As Monty and his Harvard roommates begin a hysterical journey through the winter with Simon at their side, Simon begins to change their view of the world. He lives life in a way that other simply do not understand and cannot comprehend. Simon challenges the beliefs of life and government, and even challenges what those around him hold dear.
Simon lives with only one regret. That regret is that, in his early years, he walked out on his family. As he is growing older, the weight of that regret has been weighing heavily on his heart. He takes one last opportunity to make things right with his son.
I am not going to tell you how this movie ends, but I will say this . . . We all have regrets in our life, but it is what we do with them that makes the difference in who we are. In the movie, Simon carries a small bag of rocks with him everywhere he goes. Each rock is a memory. One is a woman . . . The woman. One is a really good nights sleep. As he takes the opportunity to make things right with his son, he picks up another rock. A memory.
All too often, we live life in a way that the regrets pile up. We do nothing to correct those regrets. We do nothing to save the memories of the things we treasure. Then, a lifetime later, we look back on faded images and broken memories and wonder where the time went. We wonder if our memories have failed us and we wonder if the things we remember are real, or just dreams.
When I was growing up, my mother was a bit of a shutterbug. She took photos of everything. Us at home, vacations, school functions, etc. Things I don’t even remember, but I have photos that document the occasions. When I got married to my wife, my mother gave me my “baby album” full of its memories. I can look back over the first 18 years of my life, as documented by my mother, and share the stories of things that happened.
I love some of those images. I can remember singing in the photos of the choir concert in Junior High. I can even remember some of the songs we sang. I can remember the sign language we used as choreography for one of the songs. These were happy times.
Some of the images are embarrassing. Like the one of me, in my mother’s high heels and lipstick, talking on the phone when I was round 4. This image has been used to haunt me, and as blackmail for years! I no longer have to worry about this image, as I am happily married!
Others bring back memories of regret. I see the images of my brother and I playing as kids. I wonder if I ever really told him how much I love him. See, he passed away in a car accident a few years back. I know that he knew, but I’m not really sure I ever really told him.
This book is a time capsule. It holds the keys to my memories. It takes me places, both good and bad, that I will treasure for a lifetime. Even memories of sad events are memories that can be treasured. It is never too late to start keeping memories.
