Memories Move Us
Memories Move Us
Memories move us to tears sometimes. Other times memories move us to feeling overwhelming joy, happiness, and motivation. Memories move us like music to our ears. Music can have a softening effect on our lives and mind. Sometimes we listen to certain music to calm us down, refocus our thoughts, or revive us. Music can also get us energized, encourage us to go for our dreams, or inspire us. Memories move us in a similar way.
Why do you save your photos, or other things of importance laying around your home? They can be reminders of where we came from, where we are going, and why we are doing what we do everyday at school, work, or with our family. Memories are a memorial of what happened in the past, whether good or bad. I challenge you to save the things that remind you of the hard times too, for that is a moment when you were shaped into who you are today.
Journal about your life, for one day you will look back and see how far you have come. Not only do memories move us, but when they are written down and saved we can pass on these stories and lessons to our children or grandchildren. When your child comes up to you and asks, “what was life like when you were my age?,” you will be able to not only answer them but also show them because you saved your memories.
Go even deeper, and save many things from your own childhood days and preserve your tangible memories. I am not just talking about your photos or videos online. Also preserve your favorite and most important things you can hold in your hand. For example, save your own baby’s first shoes, the special souvenir you got from your family vacation, or your first meaningful gift you received from your boss at work.
Imagine opening a time capsule 10, 20, or 30 years later to view all these sentimental items you preserved. Gather the family and friends around. Invite everyone to bring a pot luck meal and write down the recipe on a card to share with everyone here. Make a family recipe book to save in your family time capsule. What was life like when you were born? Your child will not be able to remember what happened to them during their first three to four years of life. Help them remember, when your child opens their very own Baby’s Time Capsule during their high-school graduation party.
Imagine your child opening a “Message to the Future” letter from their great grandmother, who may have passed away early on in your child’s life. What predictions did the great grandmother have for your child? What words of wisdom, funny or important stories did she share? It is a priceless moment with friends and family gathered around crying and laughing, as everyone is reminiscing.
So, what is a memory you can think of that instantly takes you to your happy place? What memory moves you? Comment below.
Making Milestone Moments Count,
