10 Things to Pass on to Grandchildren
There are many different things grandchildren should know. There are days when the seconds go by so slow. There are also days when time flies. No one knows the hour or day when we will take our last breath. This is why every day on this earth is important to capture. Learn from and pass on to the children of future generations.
A few months ago I visited my Grandma. It is so exciting to hear all her stories of what it was like when she was born or growing up. There was no Google when she grew up. She actually had to go to the library and use the “card catalog” to find what she needed to do a research paper for school. It was so much slower than just going to Google and typing in what you are looking for. There were no cell phones. The phones had long cords that you wrapped yourself up in. There was no GPS. You had to buy a map and find out where you were going yourself. You did not have a computerized voice telling you where to turn next. You had to use a phone book in the past to look up a number for a doctor, friend, or anything else you needed. Today, these phone books make great fire starters for your fireplace. If you wanted to “hang out” with someone you had to call them or drive to their house. There was no texting or emailing. There was also usually only one phone in the home, not one phone number per person in the house. There were no remotes for her tv. She had to actually get up off the couch and change the channel on her black and white tv. My how times have changed. You had to can your food to save money. Stores used to close on Sundays and gas was below .75 cents.
10 Things to Pass on to your Grandchildren
Let’s discuss 10 things to pass on to your grandchildren, besides candy, cookies, hugs or kisses. When you talk with someone older, it helps put your life in perspective and makes you thankful for what you have today.
1. What life was like when you went to school?
2. What are the most difficult and rewarding things about growing older?
3. Teach your grandchild your perspective about what they are learning in their history class (What was war like in the past, for example).
4. Teach a skill set that will last them their lifetime, like gardening, baking, sewing, etc.
5. Talk to your grandchild about how you made it through difficult times in your life, like the great depression or other life altering events.
6. Play old games with your grandchildren, like bridge or old maid. Keep these traditional old games alive and include the instructions to these old games in a Baby Time Capsule, so when the grandchild is old enough to play they can open the time capsule and learn how. What a great way to keep memories alive and old traditions alive. Get a decorative Baby Time Capsule here.
7. What your childhood was like when you were born?
8. Don’t let the art of snail mail fade away. Send your grandchild an actual card or letter in the mail once per month. It would be awesome to collect all these cards or letters over the years, and put them together in a book to save and read years later.
9. Teach your grandchildren to love reading. There is so much wisdom in others that we can learn from.
10. Teach your grandchildren about your family and values. What better way to keep your family name alive, then to pass on traditions and strong virtues.
