Unique Family Reunion Memories
Set up a fun time of unique family reunion memories with some of these great ideas. Never forget where you came from, who in your family helped influence your life, and the fun, funny, and impacting stories that create your family. Sometimes it is difficult to get your whole family together for a reunion, so we encourage you to video record your family reunion and save these unique family reunion memories and fun to put on You Tube for others to see who live far away. It will help those long distance family members feel like they were there with you too.
A family reunion is a perfect place to take pictures or get out the box of old photographs and share memories. Make sure you take the most important “big” photo of everyone while you are all together. Have fun and be creative with your group photos. Make this day count.
1. We suggest you sending out RSVP cards before the family reunion and ask guests to bring one thing that reminds them of their life right now, to add to the Family Time Capsule you can make at the family reunion. A time capsule is one way to start off your fun of unique family reunion memories. Also ask the family members to fill out cards with a note about why they included this item in the time capsule and what it reminds them of or why it is so important to them.
2. Have a photo scavenger hunt. Remember the good old days of having scavenger hunts as kids at school, church, or other social events? When you are at a family reunion, it is like opening a time capsule because everyone is telling stories of the past. Set up this day of unique family reunion memories right from the beginning and create a scavenger hunt with clues along the way, that include stories of family members of the past.
You can help your children and great grandchildren learn more about your family at the same time, in a fun way. Hide photos, or have the participants carry a camera with them so when they find a clue they have to take a picture of it. For example, have a clue lead to a restaurant where some of the great grandparents first met. Who is the family member wearing the same shirt they wore as a teenager? Take a photo of them.
3. Have a story exchange time and set up a bonfire area where all of the great grandparents can gather together and the younger children can interview them about what life was like when they were kids. You could also put clues on index cards, and the kids have to match up the cards with whomever they think was involved in the story. When they get it right, the story is told. Again, don’t forget to video or audio record these stories to save in a Family Time Capsule. You can then take photos and creating new and unique family reunion memories to share in a scrapbook for future generations.
4. Imagine being able to open this Family Time Capsule 20 years later at another family reunion. Unfortunately some of the family members will no longer be there, but their memories will be, including some of their handwritten notes as you can also fill out “Message to the Future” letters to save in the time capsule. Have the adults of the family fill out these letters, leaving messages of hope, predictions about the future, or other wisdom that they want the children to know about when the time capsule is opened in at the future family reunion.
