Time Capsule for the Home
Time Capsule for the Home
Have you ever made a time capsule for your home? It is a fun, bonding activity to do when you are building or remodeling your home. Leave notes on the inside of the walls, for the people who may own your home one day. You could also tear down a wall and remodel your own home in the future too. Wouldn’t is be fun to read what you wrote to yourself or someone else, when you tear down that wall?
When you move, or just clean out your closets, junk drawers, garage, or other spaces, you can find a lot of stuff that may have sentimental or nostalgic value to them. I recently spent a lot of time helping my parents clean out their garage. It can be really fun and funny to find you old school work from 6th grade, or your favorite shirt you never wanted to get rid of. It is like finding a time capsule buried in your house or garage. So many memories are buried inside.
A time capsule is an old friend that tells about your life growing up. It is like your younger self frozen in time or preserved very well. Imagine finding an old, embarrassing photo of yourself with an old hair style. It is interesting to see how your mind thinks as a kid and what you think is important to save, compared to when you get older.
I don’t know about you, but my world looks much different now. I remember recording music on cassette tape, wondering what the world of music and technology would look like in the future. My how times change. Now, we have videos and cameras on our cell phones, so there is no reason at all why we cannot make sure we capture fun, memorable moments in our lives.
Every now and then you will hear a story of a family who found an old time capsule in the walls of their home. Many times, it is of the original home of the owner. There once was a man who made a time capsule at age 12, and nearly three decades later a family found his time capsule. Now age 49, Robert Wright was a seventh grader when he made his time capsule for the home, when his parents were remodeling.
Robert wrote about his world at the time. He said, “Hello to whoever finds this. My name is Robert Wright. Today my dad is putting up paneling. Today is November 18th, 1978, 15 till 12:00 noon. I’m 12 years old and a student at Fontana JR. High, 7th grade. I am 5’3, blond hair, hazel eyes. Here is proof of the date. Robert Wright.” So interesting to read.
After the family who found this time capsule reported it to the news, Robert knew it was his. He remembered making this time capsule as a kid. It was filled with coins, newspapers, and other memorabilia.
A time capsule for the home is a fun way to look back and see what life was like when you were younger. It is a great feeling when we have fond memories that bring us warm, fuzzy feelings.
