Save Your Photos
Save your photos, for one day they will be beyond treasured by future generations. A couple of months ago I attended a dinner, and the conversation came about one of those guess relatives whose home had recently burnt.
All of us agreed that even if the most important thing were that nobody was hurt, it would be traumatic to drop some of the most precious belongings.
Unexpectedly, one of the guests asked us: If you had two minutes to spare something in your home before it got burnt entirely, what would that be. There were ten people around the table, and 8 of them, including myself, responded, my picture.
It wasn’t a photographers meet-up. Around that table, everybody but me had no particular passion for photography. Because they represented their loving memories but were their most treasured possessions.
There is a high possibility that photography is a passion for you if you’re reading this article. So I need to ask you one fundamental question: When was the last time you saved your photos?
Fortunately, most of us wot ever have to deal with the tragedy of a house. But there’s another threat waiting around the corner, that is much more likely to strike, losing files that are electronic for us.
It may happen for so many reasons: hard disk failure, virus infection, stolen computer, lost USB drive, scratched CD or DVD. Digital documents are amazing in so many ways but are desperately fragile.
1. Backup your hard disk.
Be sure that your images aren’t saved only in one place (your desktop/laptop computer, by way of the instance). Duplicating the content of your hard disk periodically on an external hard disk is something to consider if you dot have another backup solution.
If you’re even more paranoid than I am, you can think about storing this external hard drive somewhere else (to avoid any risk of fire or theft) like in your parent, or at work!
2. Burn your images on CDs/DVDs.
Is a cheap and easy option to have a back-up of your favorite images. However, CDs/DVDs lost or can be easily scratched, so make sure to consider one additional backup solution.
3. Use online storage.
If yore, not a massive shooter, there are loads of free online solutions that can be sufficient like uploading your images to Flickr or Dropbox or pay a small fee to secure your pictures on a web рhоtо gаllеrу lіkе ЅmugМug.
Оn thе оthеr hаnd, іf уоu hаvе thоusаnds of images to spare, or if you would like to save your entire hard disk (not just your picture files), you could consider using a cloud storage.
4. Print your images and put them in a photo album.
Is the best way to stop them from electronic loss and the bonus is that they won’t be sleeping on your hard disk anymore (let’s be fair, do you frequently browse your electronic archives on your PC?) And will be accessible for the entire family on a daily basis!
5. Save your prints, too!
You have family records full of prints taken during the era when the film was our only alternative. These images are precious and should be secured.
Digitizing them using a scanner can be time-consuming, but it’s the best way to make sure that these priceless memories will be there even if anything were to happen to your photo albums.
Save your photos somewhere that is special. Save your photos that are the most important in a time capsule you create for yourself, your family, or someone special. Get your own time capsule here. Where do you save your photos? Comment below.
Making Milestone Moments Count,
– Marcie
