Remember the 90s Films
Remember the 90s films? They were some of the best movies. It’s pretty incredible how quickly time flies. After all, it looks like only yesterday people were trying to determine what to call the decade that just passed–and apparently, nobody has quite figured that out yet. As time seems to move somewhat more quickly without popular consensus for what the words should be for the previous ten years and the ten years which are coming, it is sensible to return to a period where you at least knew what to call the decade: the nineties.
It seems as though some things from the 90s have been able to retain their significance and influence on pop culture, even as DVRs and HDTV substitute vcrs takes the place of just having a huge television in your living room. And it makes sense that the culture from the 1990s would have the ability to survive because it had been something of its own combined with the best elements of thе 20 оr 30 уеаrs bеfоrе іt. It’s as if the 1990s were the time in music and tv and film where people finally figured out how to best incorporate their favorite influences together with a surprisingly sunny disposition. And in turn, this enabled that decade to crank out a few of the most criminally underappreciated films that continue heating hearts and keeping folks laughing to thіs dау wіthоut fееlіng (tоо) оutdаtеd.
If you’re just flipping through the channels trying to find the ideal movie to watch on your HDTV, you might end up quitting on 90s favorites more often than you realize. Whether it’s watching Alicia Silverstone and Britney Murphy as young girls in the favorite “Clueless” or spending equal amounts of time laughing and fighting back the tears as Steve Martin plays the father of the bride in “Father of the Bride,” there are lots of truly heartwarming films that are as gracious as they are entertaining. It seems like some of the best throwbacks high school graduation movies are also a product of the 1990s. Whether it’s “Can Hardly Wait” or “10 Things I Hate About You,” teenaged girls and those people who used to be them definitely can find themselves getting sucked into satellite TV for over a couple of hours if one of those 90s favorites happens to be on.
In fact, the 1990s even managed to perform other decades better than those other decades did themselves over a couple of times. Who could forget the seminal film “Dazed and Confused,” which introduced the world to over a couple of important actors who went on to have great careers, but more than that, happened to catch perfectly the freedom and possibility that comes with breaking out of a small town? A film with a perfect 1970s vibe and the sort of desperate optimism that comes with a Bruce Springsteen song was not made in its decade, but rather, 20 years down the line.
There are moments of 1990s filmmaking that you might want to avoid if you’re in control of the satellite tv and not trapped in a public place or on an airplane. While so many flicks from this decade have been able to survive the sands of time, there are a few helpful hints to making sure you don’t accidentally get sucked into a 90s film that didn’t manage to age well. If the words “Pauly Shore” are attached at all, you don’t want to settle in for that trip down memory lane.
