DIY Time Capsule

Look back and see how far you have come and how much you have changed. Where do you get your weirdness or genius gene from? Where do you preserve your memories, or all those cell phone photos? What makes you feel nostalgic?

Can you imagine making a video now to watch back later again in the future? What do you find cool now, that years later you will just laugh at and wonder why you found it “cool?”

How did people keep memories alive in the past, to make sure we knew their stories to this day? Have you ever written a letter to yourself or read an old letter that your dad may have written your mom when they were dating? All of these ideas and questions are important to ask when discussing preserving memories or journaling.

Learn from the Past

You learn from your mistakes. It is always great to find closure and there is comfort in being able to tie loose ends with others in our past. If you never got a proper goodbye, a journal can help you get your thoughts out. When we talk to others about our past, it helps us find our identity to anchor us better. We find meaning in preserving memories and storytelling. Learn from the past and use it to frame your present and future. Use a time capsule to preserve your values, to share with yourself in the future.

Preserving Memories and Values

Write down special messages you remember being taught through storytelling as a child. Our silly moments when we are younger, seem to help us remember things longer into the future. What memories can you collect in tangible form now, to preserve in a time capsule then pass on to your children in the future? A time capsule can be a great, silly, thing to do to have fun with your kids and pass on values.

The world changes so quickly. We take it for granted and forget to write things down we learn along the way which are priceless lessons in life. World events help define us and the daily grind helps shape who we are in the future. What values have you learned from your family, school, work, etc that has influenced you for the better?

Preserve Memories, Storytelling

Take the time to interview (in written, audio recording, or video form) older family members or friends who can give you great insight into what life was like in the past. It is a great way to keep memories and values alive in your culture. Ask questions like:

  1. Who has been significant in your life?
  2. What did you like to do for fun in the past?
  3. What did you care about most in the past?
  4. How did you spend your time?
  5. What would you miss the most, if it were lost?
  6. What customs or special rituals do you have?
  7. What has happened during your lifetime that is important to share with others?
  8. How did you make a living in the past?
  9. What family stories do you tell again and again?
  10. What do you value most?
  11. What were some of your most favorite places to go as a child?
  12. What was your daily routine like in the past?
  13. What did you do with your free time in the past?
  14. What does your heart good?
  15. What books, sayings, philosophies matter to you the most?
  16. What makes you laugh?
  17. What makes you cry?
  18. What important people have you met throughout life? What makes them important?
  19. What is unique about you and your family?
  20. What values would you like to pass on to your grandchildren?
