Michael Phelps Olympic Legacy
The Michael Phelps Olympic legacy story is unprecedented. It is an Olympic legacy that we will remember for decades. Last night was the closing ceremonies. Over the past two weeks, the world came together to watch Michael Phelps Olympic legacy in the making. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity for so many to see.
The world’s greatest athletes competed in Rio, after working hard and practicing for years. The Olympics were their dream and now a reality this year in Rio. I want to congratulate all of the athletes on a job well done. I hope they all take great pride in their efforts and achievements. Can you imagine winning a medal in front of your nation? Rio 2016 was definitely a story of many Olympic legacies, but we are focusing on Michael Phelps.
Michael Phelps Olympic Legacy Story
Filled with amazing memories, there is one story that stands out the most to me. First, let’s begin by telling you about Joseph Schooling’s story. He wanted to be just like Michael Phelps in the Olympics. However Joseph was from Singapore and they were certainly not known for their swimming. In the 100 meter butterfly swimming race, Joseph not only beat Michael Phelps, but with a new world record 50.39 seconds. Phelps tied for the Siver medal, but with a proud smile on his face, especially when he saw who beat him.
Schooling met his idol (Michael Phelps) when he was age 13 in 2008. That moment encouraged Schooling to work hard and beat Phelps one day in the Olympics. This legacy story is not all about the medals Phelps won, but to emphasize the power of mentors and inspiring others around you. Sometimes people are watching, learning, and listening intently to you when you don’t even know they are.
The Power of a Mentor
Michael Phelps Olympic legacy story lives on in Joseph Schooling, as he followed and applied what he learned from Phelps. Just like Phelps, Schooling made sacrifices and left home to be trained better after meeting his idol. He had more determined goals to win an Olympic medal after meeting the person he wanted to be in the future. It is almost like Schooling wrote his own “Message to the Future” letter to himself, saying one day I will win Olympic gold. Then, he put that letter in a Legacy Time Capsule, and opened it to see his prediction come true this year at the Rio Olympics. What an inspiring story of what can happen when you put your mind to accomplishing your goals, and learning lessons from the best (Phelps).
It is ironic that after Schooling won the gold medal, Phelps looked up to him on the podium while wearing this silver medal he tied for in the Olympic games. Mentoring goes both ways, you can learn from the young and old. Never underestimate the power of what a child can teach you about life.
What a memorable moment to have, and leave as Phelps has chosen to retire this year and spend more time with his son, Boomer, and fiancee, Nicole. I wonder what “Message to the Future” letter Phelps will leave for Boomer in his Baby Time Capsule? What are Phelps and Nicole’s predictions for Boomer’s future……maybe the next Olympic swimmer?
