Message in a Bottle
Have you ever put a message in a bottle? It is a very fun activity to do no matter how old you are. It is a way to connect with nature. Get out of the house and do something that takes you back in time. Get away from social media for a day, put your phone down for a day, and “rough it,” as the saying goes.
Spend the day going out in the country with your family to connect on a deeper level. It is so much fun when the whole family can get together and bond closer. Go sit outside in the sun and spend time sharing memories while making chocolate smores. It is important to have a day of rest and let your mind recuperate from the issues and business of our daily world.
Message in a Bottle – A Blast from the Past Activity
This message in a bottle activity has a twist. It is a scavenger hunt too for the family to participate in. Set it up as a long lost story of one of your ancestors in the family. It is a great way to make an old story come alive. Split the family up in teams of two. Then, before the activity begins one family member will write out many clues to spread throughout the country, with little pieces to the bigger story.
This story could be about your children’s great, great, great grandfather. For example, use the clue to lead to items that are heirloom or representative of his life and story. He was a man who grew up in a different country with little food in their two room house. Talk about how he did not know what he was missing in the world because he did not have anyone to compare himself to. Show a clue of a home school, with his mother teaching him. They have to find a pencil sticking out of the ground in a particular area, representing school time for him.
Scavenger Hunt Fun Continues
Then, lead that to another clue of him going to college, as the first member in the family. They will find the next item under a bridge, which is an old business card from his first career after out of college. He used his money from his job to bring the rest of his family over to the United States, so hide this next clue of fake money in a piggy bank on a porch somewhere.
The final clue of him getting married and having his own children, will be in a message in a bottle inside of a Family Time Capsule hidden in their living room, when the whole family returns back home. Who will find the message in a bottle first? Can you imagine what an actual handwritten letter from their great, great, great grandfather, in that old message in a bottle, says.
The time capsule holds other items, besides the message in a bottle. It also has an old pocket watch worn by their great, great, great grandfather. There are also old photos, other hand written stories about what his daily life was like, and sentimental mementos. It was a beautiful, heartfelt moment because the family never knew that the great grandmother has been keeping this time capsule for decades. It had a “Do NOT Open Until” date of today on the lid of the time capsule. So, today was the day to set up this fun, message in a bottle, reminiscing activity.
It was an opening ceremony, of this time capsule, that will never be forgotten. There were tears and laughter as family was gathered around this message in a bottle reading their great, great, great grandfather’s words of wisdom. Sometimes it can be fun to throw these bottles in the ocean, but sometimes it can be more fun to put them in a Family Time Capsule, to pass the story down to future generations.
