How To Make a DIY Time Capsule
Learn how to make a DIY time capsule for any occasion or event. Preserve your stories, history, and memories. Open it again, decades from now and reminisce about what life was like the year you filled your sentimental DIY time capsule. You can use the sample scrapbook type themes on our website or follow these steps to create your own decorative, artistic, and personalize background for the outside of your time capsule tin.
This grandmother loved lavender flowers, so her daughter wanted to make her a beautiful, birthday time capsule she would be proud to display on a shelf in her home as decoration.
1. Use the themes on the “Online Designer” at timecapsule.com, or go to Google. Click on the Images word. Type in whatever you want to decorate the outside of your time capsule with to create your own theme. For example, “Lavender flowers.”
2. Find an image you like and right click on your mouse. Click “Save image as.” Then, save that image to your computer with a name you will remember like, “Lavender Flowers.” Make sure you also remember where you saved the image on your computer. For example, Save it to your “desktop” on your computer.
- Go back to the “Online Designer” and click on “Add your own image.” Then find the photo you saved and click “open.” When the photo is loaded, click on it to move it where you want it, or click on the arrows in the bottom right corner of the photo and drag the mouse to stretch the photo bigger or smaller. You can stretch it to fill the whole page if you want, but we recommend making sure it is a high resolution photo to do that, so it does not look grainy. See the next two photos below for understanding step 3.
Double click on the photo you saved to load it to your online designer page.
Click on the arrows in the bottom right corner of this photo to stretch it bigger or make it smaller. Click in the middle of the photo to move it wherever you want it on the page.
This is what the page looks like after the photo is stretched to fill the whole page.
- Click on the A Icon to add a text box, to type any words you want, like Birthday Time Capsule, someone’s name, or their birthdate. You can also click on the A Icon again to add another box of text.
Click on the text box and then drag the box wherever you want it on the page. Also, click on the arrows in the bottom right corner of that text box and drag to make the text box bigger or smaller.
- Repeat steps to add other photos on top of this background.
- Repeat these steps for the other pages of this time capsule in the online designer. Click on page 2, then page 3 and repeat these steps.
- Click on the icon that says “Save as PDF.” Then open up that PDF and print your DIY Time Capsule pages onto the sticker pages included in the DIY Time Capsule paperwork.
NOTE: Make sure you put the paper in your printer the right way, so that it prints with the photo on the glossy side of the paper.
- Peel off the sticker backing, and starting at the seam of the DIY Time Capsule, roll your sticker pages onto the time capsule, making sure it is smooth. To see more details of how to do this, watch this video on You Tube, here.
Most importantly, make the time capsule for whatever you want. The sky’s the limit with ideas for these time capsules. Learn more ideas about time capsules on our website. Click on “blog” to discover different ways of how to use these time capsules.
