Housewarming New Home Gift Idea
Are you looking for a housewarming new home gift idea for someone special? Check out this memorable idea. I can pretty much guarantee you no one has thought of this gift idea.
Ahhh, the America Dream . . . To have 2.4 children, a white picket fence, and a $30,000 house. This is what I was taught growing up was the American Dream. I didn’t really understand how a person could have “point four” children, but I figured it worked out somehow. As I grew older, I began to realize that the “white picket fence” was also a dead commodity in today’s world as well. People don’t put up a picket fence in today’s world much, but my grandparents had one. Then there is the house itself. The truth is that $30,000 probably won’t buy much of a house in most area’s today, but there are still a few. Many people will spend $30,000 on a car and even more on their house. My grandfather used to see the car ads and say, “Honey, did you ever think a person would pay $30,000 for something that didn’t come with a lawn?”
The American Dream
Wherever you live, and whatever you drive, there is something in most of us that drives us to want to be a homeowner. We may not all get there, but it is always something that is in the depths of our hearts. Some people can live their lives in apartments, other in mobile homes, yet others choose to rent. Regardless of where you are now, if you have a desire to be a homeowner, never stop working until you succeed! There is nothing like going to the closing on your home and signing your life away. This is somewhat scary, but remember, it is like giving birth! The paperwork is like the labor pains, but it all goes away when the Realtor hands you the keys to the front door! (Just as the pain is forgotten when they hand you your precious baby.)
One of the best things you can do during the process is to document it all in a time capsule. Purchase one of our DIY Any Occasion Time Capsules and use it to save the moment. Have friends, family, and even your Realtor write you “Message to the Future” letters and seal them inside your capsule. Do not open them or read them until your capsule opening date. This will allow them to make predictions for the future and will allow enough time to pass to see if they come true.
Housewarming New Home or First Home Time Capsule
As you look for your new home, keep a record of all the houses that you see. Most Realtors will provide you a MLS (Multiple Listing Service) Sheet with all the information on the house itself. Keep notes on the back as to what you did and did not like about each house. If you keep all of these, you will be amazed at how many you look at before making a decision! It took my wife and I more than 6 months to find our home, and we looked at our current home three times during that time without realizing. Each time we decided against it for one reason or another. Finally, we fell in love and decided on this home. It wasn’t until later, while looking through our records, that we realized we had seen this house before. The first time, we didn’t even come inside because we didn’t believe it was large enough. The second time we “liked it, but it was too expensive.” The third time, we fell in love and had to have it!
Inside your time capsule, you can save information on where you are currently living, the keys to your “old home,” and a letter as to why you are moving in the first place. You can use a “Message To The Future” to tell yourself how long you plan on being in this house and what you believe your life will look like in the future. Include photos of your current home and living conditions. Include images of the “reasons why” you are moving as well.
Take Photos of your First Home or New Home
Be sure to include images of your new house as well. Take a ton of photos after you close on your new home, but before you move in. Take pictures of the yard, the outside of the house, and the inside as well. Take pictures of the walls, and write on the back of them how you plan on changing or not changing them. If there was a specific thing that made you fall in love with this house, or location, (like proximity to your job, Walmart, or Starbucks) include photos of those things, or a video of the drive to those things.
Document the way the house is, including anything that you need to fix, or want to upgrade. Document your belongings and furniture. Think about weather you like these things, or want to change them. Make predictions as to how your style will change over the next 10-20 years. Will you put in hardwood, or change the carpet? Will you keep the olive green refrigerator or upgrade to stainless steel? Do you like the steps in the front, or will you eventually put on a porch? Do you love how wide open the back yard is, or will you plant pine trees along the property line?
Once you have gathered all these things, seal them in your time capsule for 5 to 10 years before you open it again. See if your predictions about how you will change the walls have come true. See if you “fixed” the items you were supposed to and if the “reasons you are moving” still exist, or exist again. Take a look at all 85 houses that you looked at and decide if you made the right decision or not. Is the Starbucks or Walmart that you wanted to be close to still there, or did they go out of business? Are you still working at the same job location you wanted to be close to or did you change jobs or locations?
Whatever the situation is, your time capsule will be amazing when you open it years later. It will be a treasured piece of your story. It will be a Milestone Moment, saved in a time capsule. To make your own New Home Time Capsule, get our “Any Occasion” DIY Time Capsule. Put a photo of your first home or new home on the outside of the DIY Time Capsule. Place some of these great items inside the time capsule. Then pick a date in the future when you want to open this time capsule again and reminisce about what life was like the year you first moved in to your home. What do you think the price of homes or gas will be 30 or 50 years from now?

Making Milestone Moments Count,
