Heritage Project Ideas
Heritage project ideas are hard to find sometimes. Since it is the fourth of July, it is a time to reflect on our heritage and where we all came from. An old photograph pulled from a photo album or scrapbook can open our eyes to the past and say a lot about our family.
Help your children and great grandchildren learn about the family with these heritage project ideas. Make a fun “Remember When…” scrapbook page with old photos of great grandparents and what they did for fun growing up. Then, make another page next to it that says “Today” showing what the grandchildren do currently to have fun. It would be interesting to see how things are different or the same over the centuries.
Talk about where your story begins for your home, that your family grew up in. Do you have old photos of your home or what your bedroom looked like as a kid? Preserve these memories and mementos attached to your family and home in a Family Time Capsule you make from the “Any Occasion” DIY Time Capsule seen here. Take the time to interview your great grandparents to learn more about their past. Check out this other helpful blog seen here, with a list of possible interview questions you can use.
Make a family quilt out of old shirts from family members. Go through the closet and look for shirts you no longer wear. Then help someone in the family cut out the fabric pieces and sew them up together. You can even put the family members name on each shirt pattern to show who it came from. This could be a fun heritage project to hang up at your family reunion.
Put together an old family recipe book with the favorite recipes from each family member growing up. Make sure you write next to each recipe the story behind it or what memories you think about when you eat that food. Why is it a favorite recipe?
Visit Ancestry.com to learn more about your family roots. Other heritage project ideas include looking up other websites to help you find out more about family history. This could also be a great homework assignment for a school project.
Turn an old furniture piece or favorite item into something else, so it can still be saved even though it is falling apart. It is like recovering or turning what may seem trash into treasure. For example, turn an old favorite comforter blanket into a pillow. If this comforter blanket can’t be washed anymore because it may shred to pieces the next time it is washed, then cut out the good sections and turn it into a pillow for the family couch.
Take your family on a time travel trip. Drive to the locations where your great grandparents or parents first met. Where was their first date? If at a restaurant, reminisce and eat there again. Where were they married? Go there and other places significant to your family and pick up a rock or find a mementos or memorabilia to keep in your Family Time Capsule you make together. Then, 20 years later at a family reunion, open this Family Time Capsule and reminisce again.
