Go Back in Time
Go back in time and reminisce about the good old days. It’s important as parents to demonstrate how to talk to your friends live in person. Do this by teaching communication skills at your dinner table every night.
Demonstrate how to do old things, now. For example I remember listening to the radio in my teenage days and then DJ saying “where are your friends in a box.” Nowadays the cell phone and online social media has become our “friends in a box.” Is nice to be able to talk to friends and family members who live far away and you may not be able to see all the time.
When we have kids now using emojis and acronym in their school essays though there is a problem. I have talked to a few teachers in the past who have complained about this occurring in papers. It seems like there is an excuse for parents to not teach their kids social skills, now that it seems like all the social media is done online like talking to their friends, playing games, even finding or applying for a job, etc.
Go back in time again with your kids and physically teach them how to make and keep friends by general face-to-face conversation. Teach them other valuable skills that they will greatly appreciate when they end up getting a nice job and having to go to a business meeting over dinner. They need to learn how to keep their cell phone shot during important meetings like that. There are many different ways in this world to teach your children respect. This is just one of those ways. How do you teach your children social skills like respect or making friends? Please let us know in the comments below.
Do not get me wrong, I am all for social media and the power that it can do to help peers share good stories, help each other out, and even advance their careers. However I still believe there is a time and a place to hold on to the traditions, go back in time, and review old family values to keep them alive today.
A creative way to do this is to make a family time capsule and invite the great grandparents, grandparents, other family members and friends to leave heirloom items, and write a message to the future letter to the children in the family today.
Have the children open the family time capsule 20 years later when they start their High School Days to read these words of wisdom and hear the stories of the great lessons the adults I have learned in their past life, to teach their teenage grandchildren today.
Slow down time with the family time capsule. Teach great moral lessons through these message to the Future letters. Be a part of history and leave your mark on the family even when you are gone.
Go back in time with us, and share a lesson you learned from your grandparents that you are grateful for. Share in the comments below.
Making Milestone Moments Count,
