Family Traditions to Pass On
Looking for family traditions to pass on to your kids? Traditions stir up many great feelings, memories, and stories that are meant to be treasured forever. Family traditions to pass on, from generation to generation, should be written down, audio and voice recorded, so others know exactly how to do them.
Family traditions can help bond the generation gaps and bring family and friends closer together. Even if you live far away, with social media and the internet it is even easier for family to do traditions together. For example, you can have an online scavenger hunt and email your answers to each other of what you found at each location you are suppose to look.
Many traditions involve food and favorite recipes, especially on holidays like Thanksgiving or Christmas. In fact, that is a great time to also do another family tradition this year and make your own Family Time Capsule. Fill it with these family traditions written down and photos of your memories. Also save your most important and sentimental mementos or memorabilia in the Family Time Capsule.
Then, have each family member fill out a “Message to the Future” letter making predictions about where you predict the family or your life will be or look like in 20 to 30 years. Then choose a “Do NOT Open Until” date for the Family Time Capsule. Finally, in the future on that chosen date open your Family Time Capsule and reminisce about what life was like in the past. How much fun would that be?
When the time capsule is opened, tell stories of those who have gone before or passed away. When you are looking at the heirloom items and photos from the time capsule, the great grandchildren can learn about the family and the old traditions you are passing on. Build memories that will last a lifetime. Build relationships and teach the great grandchildren to honor family traditions.
Whether it is making Grandma’s favorite carrot cake recipe, a yearly vacation, or visiting cousins for Easter every year, a family tradition can be something big or small. Also, no matter how old you get, it is important that you do not outgrow your family traditions to pass on to the next generation.
In our house, a family member gets to use a special red plate when it’s his or her birthday. Many times they also get their favorite meal served on this plate. This plate reads: “You are special today.” It is a family tradition that really does make you feel special. Acknowledge the significance of family traditions by making things each year, doing something special, or going somewhere you enjoy.
Think about your own family and ask yourself what traditions do you have? How did these family traditions come to be? What is their significance to you all? It is easy for it to happen. As you get older, family traditions can die off as elders in your family pass away, moved away, or lifestyles change.
That is the main reason why a Family Time Capsule is so valuable. This causes you to reminisce about things that happened or you did during your childhood with your family that were significant at the time. Don’t let these family traditions pass away, but instead capture them in a Family Time Capsule using the “Any Occasion” DIY Time Capsule seen here.
